Women of Equatorial Guinea are not on an equal playing field as the men of the country. There are many laws in this country that attempt to get women equality but nothing has really been implemented.
Here are some reasons why men and women are not on an equal level as each other:
  • Men have the option to "buy virgins" for marriage.
  • Men are allowed to physically abuse their wives as long as it happens inside the house because "punishment" is acceptable.
  • More boys are enrolled in school than girls are.
  • In the case of divorce men are almost always granted the children.
  • In the Bubi tribe, woman are inspected for virginity. If they have been shown to have been raped they are still put in front of everyone to be shamed.
In different places different customs are acceptable. I just find it hard to accept that they do not have the same laws as we do in the U.S. since they have a government like ours. But then again, the government is corrupt there too. Their human rights are very bad and the rights of women are just worst. Men there get the better hand of the deal in this country. I hope for the women that shortly down the road they will be treated equal by men.
